Commerce alimentaire : 391 milliards FCFA échangés, 27,18 milliards dans l’ombre

A recent study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sheds light on the dynamics of food trade in Senegal over the period 2014-2022, revealing a total of 391.08 billion FCFA exchanged (or $634 million at the rate of 617 FCFA/USD, an indicative average over the period). According to the data, 93% of this trade, or approximately 363.90 billion FCFA ($589.62 million), is recorded, reflecting relatively robust formalization of transactions. In contrast, 7%, equivalent to approximately 27.18 billion FCFA ($44.38 million), remains unrecorded, highlighting the existence of informal or undeclared activities.

These figures, which could include exports of peanuts, fish, or other key agricultural products, as well as imports of grains or processed foods, indicate a largely structured food economy.

However, the unrecorded share, although a minority, points to potential challenges in terms of regulation and taxation, issues that the Economic and Social Recovery Plan could seek to address to strengthen food sovereignty.
