According to Jeune Afrique, the Court of Auditors' report, published a few months ago, caused tensions within the institution. Prominent members criticized the document in public memos.
It all began when Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko accused Macky Sall's administration of concealing public debt and manipulating figures. The government then asked the Court of Auditors to conduct an audit to confirm these allegations.
Five months later, the report has sparked internal criticism. Mamadou Thiao, president of the Chamber of Administrative Affairs, expressed concern about the "completeness, accuracy, and relevance" of the information, believing that the methodology used could call into question the conclusions.
Mamadou Faye, the court's first president, criticized the auditors for not verifying the reliability of government data as required. "If this work was done, the report does not reflect it," he said, adding that the auditors were unable to confirm a funding surplus in 2022 and 2023.
Jeune Afrique also notes that the Chamber of Budgetary and Financial Affairs, responsible for auditing, was not competent to directly audit public finances, its role being limited to monitoring the quality of audits, according to the law.
