Etats-Unis : Donald Trump affirme vouloir rétablir la peine de mort pour tout meurtre à Washington
Donald Trump promised on Tuesday that the death penalty will be imposed for any murder committed in the US capital Washington, even though the death penalty was abolished in 1981.
A significant announcement in Democratic territory. US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will reinstate the death penalty in Washington, DC, the US capital, for any murder committed in the city.
"If someone kills someone in the capital, Washington, DC, we will seek the death penalty. And that is a powerful deterrent," the Republican president said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.
The death penalty was abolished 44 years ago, in 1981, in the U.S. capital. Eleven years later, a congressional referendum to reinstate the punishment was held. It followed the murder of a congressional aide in the city in 1992. However, two-thirds of the residents of this Democratic stronghold rejected the referendum.
Washington, special status
This time, the US president may skip this step. The administration will be able to seek the death penalty in federal cases, but not in those heard at the local level.
Donald Trump may attempt to change the laws in force in Washington DC, which is not part of any state and has a special status.
