This Monday, several European leaders are accompanying Volodymyr Zelensky to a new meeting with Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. This follows the meeting between the American president and Vladimir Putin last Friday.

A historic meeting. Three days after his meeting with Vladimir Putin, which resulted in no concrete announcements, Donald Trump welcomed Volodymyr Zelensky to the Oval Office this Monday, as part of a possible peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, a few months after publicly criticizing him during a previous meeting last February.

This time, the Ukrainian head of state will be supported by several European allies, namely European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Council President Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and finally, NATO chief Mark Rutte.

This major meeting is a first since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

At a recent press conference in Brussels (Belgium), Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this "unity", stressing that he did not know "exactly" what was discussed during the exchange between his American and Russian counterparts.

“PEACE MUST BE LASTING”

"We all have a deep desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting," the Ukrainian leader also said on X, a few minutes after his arrival on American soil.

For his part, Donald Trump has already stated that Volodymyr Zelensky could end the war with Russia "almost immediately," on the condition that he gives up on regaining control of Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014, and joining NATO.

"Ukrainian President Zelensky can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants, or he can keep fighting. Remember how it started. No way he's getting back Crimea, which Obama gave him (twelve years ago, without a single shot being fired), and NO WAY UKRAINE IS JOINING NATO," the US president wrote on his network, Truth Social.

However, Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, assured that during the meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Russia had made territorial "concessions" concerning five Ukrainian regions.

“PRESENT A UNITED FRONT”

This Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron sharply criticized Vladimir Putin, who, according to him, "does not want peace" but a "capitulation" of Ukraine.

A criticism quickly described as an "abject lie" by Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Telegram.

Regarding the meeting scheduled to take place this Monday in Washington, Emmanuel Macron stated that the aim was to "present a united front between Europeans and Ukrainians" and to ask the Americans "to what extent" they would be prepared to contribute to the security guarantees proposed to Ukraine in a possible peace agreement.
