(Palm Beach) Donald Trump said Tuesday he was more "confident" in the possibility of an agreement with Moscow on a possible settlement of the war in Ukraine, after the discussions between Americans and Russians in Riyadh, and assured that he would "probably" meet Vladimir Putin before the end of the month.
The American president, questioned by the press at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, also declared himself "totally in favour" of the presence in Ukraine of European peacekeeping troops, a subject which divides Europeans.
High-level talks between Russian and American officials in Riyadh on Tuesday were "very good," Donald Trump said.
Asked about a possible meeting with Vladimir Putin before the end of the month, Donald Trump simply replied: "probably."
By calling the Russian president on the phone last week to consider settling directly with him an end to the conflict in Ukraine, Donald Trump caused a shock in Europe and in Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky denouncing on Tuesday talks "on Ukraine without Ukraine".
"I'm very disappointed" by those comments, Donald Trump responded. "I hear they're upset that they don't have a seat (at the negotiating table), when they've had a seat for three years, and even well before that," the Republican said.
"I believe I have the power to end the war," he said.
Asked about the emerging and divisive idea among European countries of sending European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, Donald Trump replied: "If they want to do that, that's great. I'm totally in favor of it," adding that "we (the United States) don't have to send them there, because, you know, we're very far away."
