Donald Trump has asked the US Congress to approve the withdrawal of $4.9 billion in international aid, the White House announced Friday, an announcement that significantly increases the likelihood of a federal shutdown at the end of September.
The cuts "affect programs at the State Department, the United States Agency for International Development, and international assistance programs," said the letter sent to the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives and shared by the White House budget office.
Democrats had recently warned that any attempt to reverse the funding already approved by Congress would destroy any possibility of negotiating with them to avoid budgetary paralysis, the so-called "shutdown," after September 30.
