UN Secretary-General: Macky Sall weighed down by a controversial decision

Macky Sall

Since leaving power in Senegal, Macky Sall has been forging his own path far from Dakar. The former president, now head of his consulting firm Semmo Holding, aspires to an international career and hasn't ruled out running for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). But a decision made a year ago may well have dampened his chances, as well as the international community's enthusiasm for him.

In September 2023, during an interview with France 24, Macky Sall was cautious but open: "For the moment, my priority is not there, but tomorrow, if there is a demand at this level, why not?" A few months later, while still in office, he made a decision with far-reaching consequences: the postponement of the presidential election, initially scheduled for February 25, 2024. This choice, which plunged Senegal into a major political crisis, continues to weigh on his image.

According to Jeune Afrique, this announcement, made a year ago, sparked fierce international criticism. While some close associates already envisioned him succeeding António Guterres, whose term ends in 2026, this misstep sowed doubt. The postponement, followed by violence, tensions with the opposition, and a challenge to Senegal's democratic stability, tarnished the reputation of a leader once hailed for his leadership. The international community, which had applauded his decision not to seek a third term in July 2023, saw this maneuver as a shadow over his record.

Today, as Macky Sall attempts to reinvent himself, this precedent could hamper his candidacy for the UN, a position requiring impeccable stature and diplomatic consensus. His ambitions, while legitimate, are now facing growing skepticism.
