Cancer du poumon : voici le deuxième facteur de risque derrière le tabac
August 1st marked World Lung Cancer Day. Lung cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, is primarily caused by smoking. However, according to a U.S. study, air pollution could replace asbestos exposure as the second-leading risk factor.
Lung Cancer Day was held on August 1st. An important date, given that this cancer is the third most common and represents the leading cause of death from cancer in France among men, according to the National Cancer Institute .
While lung cancer deaths have decreased by 8% worldwide between 1990 and 2019, a study conducted by researchers at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami, Florida, USA , has updated the ranking of the main risk factors.
Tobacco remains the leading cause of lung cancer deaths, with 66% of deaths related to tobacco in 2019 (compared to 72% in 1990). However, the study notes that the mortality rate for women from tobacco-related lung cancer is increasing, with a 2% increase over the same period.
The most striking finding of the study is that air pollution has now overtaken asbestos exposure as the second most common risk factor. "Air pollution has now become the second most common risk factor, accounting for nearly 20% of the mortality rate from lung, trachea, and bronchus cancer globally and more than 25% in China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria," the report states.
"The association between lung cancer mortality and air pollution is still controversial, but growing evidence suggests there is a link that warrants attention. This paper provides further evidence that this is not a problem limited to one country; it is a global phenomenon," adds Estelamari Rodriguez, co-author of the research. It is worth noting that, while asbestos bans are progressing worldwide, "asbestos-related lung cancer deaths in the United States remain nearly double the global average," they note.
