February 19, 2025, marked a historic turning point for medicine in Senegal with the completion of the country's first bone marrow transplant. This feat was achieved at Dalal Jamm Hospital in Guédiawaye, under the direction of Professor Fatou Samba Ndiaye.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Social Action, "the patient, a Senegalese man suffering from a blood disorder, benefited from an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant, a procedure in which stem cells are taken from the patient himself before being reinjected after treatment."
This achievement is the result of several years of work and preparation.
"The medical team at Dalal Jamm Hospital, supported by a partner, ensured that this transplant was fully financially covered, marking a significant step forward in the accessibility of high-quality healthcare," according to the same source. This success is the result of a major investment by the Senegalese government, which enabled the construction of a modern Clinical Hematology Center, worth 1.5 billion FCFA, equipped with cutting-edge technologies and meeting international standards.
The Minister of Health and Social Action, Dr. Ibrahima Sy, expressed his sincere congratulations to Professor Ndiaye, the entire medical team, as well as the Director of Dalal Jamm Hospital and their partners for this exceptional achievement.
He stressed that "this achievement is part of a series of reforms aimed at strengthening Senegal's autonomy in healthcare and ensuring quality care for all."
As a reminder, bone marrow transplantation is a crucial step in the treatment of many serious hematological pathologies, and this advance opens up promising future prospects for Senegalese patients, who will no longer need to go abroad to benefit from this type of highly complex treatment.
