Ziguinchor : 31 % de taux d’hypertension artérielle (Enquête STEPS)
Nearly a third of Ziguinchor's population suffers from high blood pressure, according to a STEPS 2024 survey conducted by the Directorate for the Fight Against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The results of this survey were shared during a workshop at the Ziguinchor government.
According to the Ziguinchor Regional Health Director, these studies have shown a prevalence rate of 31% of high blood pressure. At the end of this workshop to disseminate the results of the STEPS 2024 survey, Dr. Youssoupha Tine revealed that the study shows a diabetes rate of 4.9% in the region. A figure higher than the national average of 4.2%.
These figures, according to Dr. Tine, sufficiently demonstrate a deterioration in the health situation in the region, which is worrying.
Yet, the southern region was previously considered relatively unaffected. The regional health director cites profound changes in the lifestyles of Ziguinchor residents, including an increasingly unbalanced diet and a lack of physical activity, to explain this upward trend in the data.
Non-communicable diseases account for 74% of the causes of death worldwide, compared to 53% in Senegal, noted Dr. Tine, who also explained that the pathologies concerned are more particularly cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and mental disorders. These conditions share modifiable risk factors such as smoking, alcohol, physical inactivity, poor diet, and air pollution, added the military doctor.
Dr. Tine, on this occasion, presented a bleak picture of alcohol consumption in this region, a rate of 11%, compared to only 3% nationally, he warns.
Faced with this situation, Dr. Tine called for a strengthening of preventive actions, particularly through raising public awareness and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.
The Regional Director of Health also called for better integration of the fight against NCDs into local and national public policies.
Dr. Malick Hann, for his part, stated that the results of the survey will serve as a basis for the development of a new national strategy. The head of the NCD Control Division also indicated that "the Ministry of Health has recommended that these data be shared in all regions of the country, in order to facilitate advocacy with local and administrative authorities."
Dr. Hann adds that NCDs are rapidly progressing and highlights the vital need for a strong response to NCDs. Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases are among the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that require a redoubled effort.

Ziguinchor est dans la moyenne nationale: un Sénégalais sur 3 est hypertendu. Aller chez le médecin pour se faire consulter, faire faire une analyse de sang et suivre un traitement généralement très long pour ne pas dire à vie. Ça, ça demande de l'argent vu l'état de notre système de santé.
Tout le temps à boire de l'alcool.
Pourquoi Maladie Non Transmissible ?
Par exemple, le Sucre, est transmis à l'homme par l'intermediaire de Chariots, Paniers, Cartons, etc.
La publicité favorise la contagion. Les grands groupes agro industriels representent le foyer, la source de tout produit infecte.
On a plein de comportements qui sont transmissibles d'une societé à l'autre, d'un individu à l'autre.
Ce paquet d'habitudes alimentaires (transformés, salés, gras, sucrés) , est lui-meme une maladie.
Tant qu'on ne s'attaque pas aux gros problemes, ça va etre difficile.
