Serigne Massamba Mbacké : Le gardien des Xassida et fidèle disciple de Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba
Nicknamed Borom Xassida yi ("the master of the Xassida"), Serigne Massamba Mbacké remains an emblematic figure of the spiritual and intellectual legacy of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. Recognized for his physical and moral resemblance to Serigne Touba, he embodies humility, rigor, and devotion. His central role in the preservation and transmission of the Xassida, the sacred poems of Mouridism, makes him an icon of the community.
Born around 1882 in Patar, Cayor, Serigne Massamba Mbacké grew up in a deeply spiritual environment. Appointed by Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba himself, he received direct religious instruction from his father, who personally oversaw his education. From the age of 10, under the tutelage of the scholar Serigne Dame Abdourahmane Lô, he mastered the Holy Quran, revealing exceptional piety and a thirst for knowledge.
A faithful companion in exile
His attachment to Serigne Touba is absolute. He accompanies the Sheikh in the significant moments of his life, including during his exile in Mauritania, demonstrating unwavering loyalty. This companionship allows him to deepen his knowledge of the Xassida, these poems that carry Mouride thought and spirituality.
Serigne Massamba became the architect of the preservation and dissemination of the Xassida, both through oral recitation and their written transcription. His mastery and love for these sacred texts earned him the title of Borom Xassida yi. Through his work, he ensured the longevity of the literary and spiritual work of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

Au lieu de produire un travail biographique sérieux, Seneweb relaie des récits et légendes manifestement fabriqués de toutes pièces par certains talibés zélés. Cet homme pieux mérite infiniment mieux qu’un article qui respire la paresse intellectuelle.
La véritable menace qui pèse sur le mouridisme — comme sur toutes les confréries religieuses du Sénégal — réside dans la dérive intellectuelle de certains disciples, prompts à affirmer tout et n’importe quoi, souvent en se livrant à une surenchère de récits sans fondement, parfois nourris seulement de souvenirs enjolivés des premiers mourides.
Il est urgent de mettre un terme à ces pratiques : le jour où l’opinion se lassera de cette superficialité, c’est toute la doctrine qui risque d’en pâtir. Plus de rigueur et de sérieux intellectuel dans les confréries serait un gage de respect et de pérennité de leur héritage spirituel, loin de la surenchère verbale qui ne sert ni la foi, ni la mémoire des figures qu’elle prétend honorer.
