Ziguinchor : Détresse des étudiants de Koumpentoum menacés d'expulsion de leur logement
Students from the Koumpentoum district enrolled at Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (UASZ) are in dire straits. Facing eviction from their accommodations, they have appealed to local authorities and anyone willing to help, hoping to prevent the worst. These students will be four months behind on their rent by the end of January 2026, a disastrous situation for the continuation of their studies.
In front of their five-room apartment near the AUSZ, these students explained that they were facing eviction by the landlord, who ordered them to pay or vacate the apartment.
Papa Sow, a Master's student in the Department of Geography and former president of the Association of Students from the Department of Koumpentoum, said that they are in a critical situation.
"We students from the Koumpentoum department here in Ziguinchor are currently in alarming situations related to our apartment, because we have three months of arrears and soon the end of January will mean that we will have four months of arrears. The landlord says he will evict us at the end of the month which will be very deplorable for us students," said Papa Sow.
The threat of expulsion coincides with the arrival of new high school graduates from Kompentoum who are being assigned to UASZ. This adds to the anxiety among these students, according to Papa Sow.
"If they arrive here at the university and can't find accommodation, that's a major problem. And we also have mattress problems," he continued.
Thus, these students are seeking the support of the prefect of Koumpentoum, the mayors of the ten communes of this department in the Tambacounda region and all men and women with political responsibilities.
"We are making a solemn appeal to our authorities, particularly the administrative authorities like the Prefect of Koumpentoum. We, your children who are here at the university, are suffering. We are also appealing to the political authorities, the president of the departmental council, the ten mayors of the department and all people of goodwill," urged Papa Sow.
