An 53 de l’assassinat d’Amilcar Cabral : Guinée-Bissau la junte rend un hommage à un héro national
January 20, 1973 – January 20, 2026: 53 years since the assassination of José Lopes da Costa Cabral, affectionately known as Amílcar Cabral, founder of the Guinea and Cape Verde Independence Party, the father of the Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde independence movement, received tributes from the ruling junta in Guinea-Bissau.
On January 20th, the anniversary of the assassination of Amilcar Lopes Cabral, founder of the Guinean and Cape Verdean nationalities, the President of the Transitional Republic, Major General Horta Inta-a, paid tribute to this national hero and to all the heroes of Guinea-Bissau. The Amura fortress, established as a mausoleum for the heroes of the revolution and the final resting place of Amilcar Cabral since 1975, along with several other heroes, served as the site for a wreath-laying ceremony.
An act considered symbolic by several observers, a sign of recognition by the State of the Freedom Fighters of the Homeland and of the legacy of Amilcar Cabral in the struggle for the independence of Guinea and Cape Verde.
According to several media outlets, the Head of State of Guinea-Bissau called for reflection, national unity, and an end to the culture of violence. Major General Horta Inta-a reaffirmed his commitment to building a country of peace, stability, and prosperity.
As a reminder, José Lopes da Costa Cabral, commonly known as Amilcar Cabral, born in 1924, was assassinated on January 20, 1973 in Conakry, one year before the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.
