Cedeao vs AES : « Nous sommes tenus de faire en sorte que la famille se retrouve » (Cheikh Niang)
Barely installed in his new role as Head of Diplomacy, Cheikh Niang is focusing on the burning issues on which Senegal is expected, particularly in the West African sub-region. A guest on this Sunday's Objection program on Sud FM, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is also in charge of African integration, spoke lucidly about the division undermining the ECOWAS region and the breakdown of relations with the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (ESA): Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
According to him, "we cannot imagine a world where we (Senegal) do not cooperate with these countries," especially in the current context marked by the growing terrorist threat. "In diplomatic priorities, we consider our sub-region as the first belt to be secured. We belong to our neighborhood. Geography dictates its rules. Moreover, we have seen an increase in jihadist activity that is approaching our borders. This shows that it is important to take our neighborhood into account," the diplomat declared.
Moreover, he continued, "the instructions I received from the Head of State are to prioritize our diplomatic action at the sub-regional level in order to safeguard our security but also develop our relations with all the countries of the sub-region."
Thus, aware of the fact that Senegal is required to strengthen its ties with its neighbors in a united ECOWAS, the Head of Diplomacy is working in synergy with his colleagues in the sub-region towards "reconciliation" between ECOWAS and the AES.
"The Malian, Nigerian, and Burkinabe populations are sister populations of Senegal. There must be a minimum of cooperation. We have this vision of working towards reconciliation between ECOWAS and the ESA. We are obliged to ensure that the family is reunited. But we know that we will have to be patient," he confides.
