CGLU Afrique : Oumar Ba élu président à Nouakchott
Meeting in Nouakchott, Mauritania, from March 23 to 25, 2026, the members of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) elected Oumar Ba of Senegal as their leader. The president of the Association of Mayors of Senegal (AMS) was elected unanimously by delegates from the continent's five regions on Tuesday, March 24.
This appointment strengthens Senegal's presence within African local government bodies. It is consistent with Oumar Ba's commitment to decentralization, as he has also chaired the Council of Territorial Authorities of the WAEMU since August 2023.
The only candidate in the running, the mayor of Ndiop succeeds Fatima Abdel Malick, who did not wish to run for a second term after her election in 2022 at the general assembly held in Kisumu, Kenya.
With the election of Mr. Ba, Senegal returns to the leadership of UCLG Africa, after the tenure of Khalifa Ababacar Sall, elected president in 2012 and then re-elected in 2015.
