The announcement of the price per kilogram of peanuts continues to generate reactions among farmers' organizations and those involved in marketing. Set at 305 CFA francs, the same level as last year, this price raises questions less about its amount than about the conditions under which it was announced.
Aly Diaw, president of the Kahi agricultural cooperative and member of CENIA, deplores the method used:
"The price per kilogram of peanuts was announced yesterday, but it is the way in which this was communicated that worries us. This announcement should have been made in the Council of Ministers, in the presence of all stakeholders, supported by the minutes of the meetings held and the proposals of the CENIA."
While acknowledging that the amount is "acceptable" in a context of falling global prices, Aly Diaw says he is concerned about other aspects:
“What concerns us most is the availability of funding. The other point is the implementation of the taraar: will they be applied or not? What support measures will be in place?”
He also regrets the lack of clarification regarding the debts of economic operators, stating that "we cannot start the campaign without having settled them." Faced with these uncertainties, he says he is "a little worried about marketing" and hopes that "the funds will be available in time."
For his part, Bassirou Ba, president of the Aar Sunu Momel movement, points to institutional inconsistencies and a communication that he considers rushed.
"The minister confirmed that the price of a kilogram of peanuts remains fixed at 305 CFA francs, the same as last year. But I would like to remind everyone that the announcement of the price does not automatically mean the start of the marketing campaign. Since when do we announce the minimum price for peanuts without first holding an inter-ministerial council meeting?"
According to him, the decision is not mentioned in any official communication from the Council of Ministers. He also asserts that the discussions mentioned by the minister with CENIA did not result in a formal agreement.
"There was a meeting about twenty days ago. But no farmers' organization or any member of CENIA commented on the price of peanuts."
Bassirou Ba insists that the publication of the prize does not mean that the campaign has been launched, due to a lack of accompanying measures:
"We do not know the tonnages reserved for industries and operators, nor the date of border openings, nor the planned system for the tarpaulins, nor the number of collection points."
Concerns are heightened by SONACOS's financial situation and the operators' debt, estimated at 184 billion CFA francs. The international context, marked by a record peanut production of 227 million tons in China, could also complicate Senegalese exports.
According to Bassirou Ba, all these grey areas expose producers to abuses on the ground:
"Today, operators can buy peanuts for 150 francs, or even less, without any penalty, because no law actually guarantees a minimum price and no accompanying measures have yet been published."
Faced with these uncertainties, he calls for vigilance from farmers, believing that the upcoming campaign could be more difficult than previous ones.

Merci
