Gabon : Champion africain de l'immigration avec près d'une personne sur cinq !
According to the World Population Review (2024), Gabon dominates African statistics with 18.72% of its population composed of immigrants, or almost 1 in 5 inhabitants. This figure places the country at the top of the 20 African nations with the highest proportions of immigrants, far ahead of Equatorial Guinea (16.44%) and Libya (12.03%). A reality that underlines Gabon's demographic diversity.
The Gabonese government is currently considering new legislation to regulate immigration, with a particular focus on informal occupations. A proposed law, to be debated in August 2025, aims to reserve seven categories of small trades (street vending, small restaurants, sewing, hairdressing, shoe repair, light construction work, and the sale of locally manufactured goods) exclusively for Gabonese citizens.
This measure, discussed at the Council of Ministers on August 12, 2025, seeks to promote local employment and address concerns about competition from foreign workers. Phased implementation is planned to avoid social tensions, although the project is already sparking debate over its impact.
