Gambie: Le Sénégalais Aliou Tine, nouveau commandant de l’Ecomig
Colonel Ndiagne Diouf is no longer the commander of the ECOWAS military mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG). He has been replaced by his comrade-in-arms, Colonel Aliou Tine. The handover ceremony took place mid-week at ECOMIG headquarters in Bakau, in the presence of the Senegalese High Commissioner to The Gambia, the National Security Advisor, representatives of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, senior officers of the Gambian Armed Forces, and ECOMIG officers.
"My intention is to work closely with the existing staff."
In his acceptance speech, the new head of ECOMIG described his appointment as a great honor bestowed upon him by ECOWAS and the Gambian government. He congratulated Colonel Diouf and his team on their achievements and pledged to preserve and build upon the legacy they had established.
“My intention is to work closely with existing personnel, Gambian security forces, and national authorities to maintain peace and security,” he stated. The senior officer also emphasized the importance of regional unity, adding that “Senegalese are Gambians and Gambians are Senegalese.”
Received by President Barrow
The security of the two countries is therefore linked and will be at the "heart of his mission," he promises.
The previous day, Colonel Tine had been received at State House by President Adama Barrow. The Gambian leader expressed his deep gratitude to ECOWAS and the Senegalese government for their services. He promised the senior officer the unwavering support of the Gambian government.
In turn, Commander Tine pledged to work closely with local authorities and to take proactive measures to address potential threats to national stability.
It must be said that ECOMIG's mission is gradually drawing to a close. The coming months will be particularly crucial, as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
According to the resident representative of the ECOWAS Permanent Mission in The Gambia, Ms. Miata Lily French, the ECOMIG forces must "ensure that the electoral process takes place peacefully so that the country can continue its economic and political development."
