At least six people were killed and 22 injured on Wednesday in Accra, the capital of Ghana, when a crowd of military recruitment candidates forced their way through the gates of a stadium, the army announced.

The stampede occurred around 06:20 (local and GMT) at the El-Wak sports stadium, when many candidates "violated security protocols and rushed inside" before the scheduled start of the recruitment session, the army explained in a statement.

"This unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of six potential recruits and injured several others," according to the text.

In total, 28 victims - dead or injured - are to be deplored, including "six people dead" and "five in critical condition", General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, head of Military Hospital No. 37 where the victims of the stampede were transported, told the press.

Ghanaian President John Mahama visited the facility during the day, according to an AFP journalist present at the scene.

At the same time, distraught, tearful families waited for news of their loved ones, while medical teams moved stretchers through crowded corridors.

Security guards struggled to contain the growing crowd outside the emergency department, where dozens of people pressed against barriers hoping to get information.

Deadly crowd movements have already marred recruitment drives and public events in Ghana, where high unemployment often forces thousands of people to apply for a limited number of jobs.

In addition to their regular military missions, Ghanaian soldiers also participate in operations to combat illegal mining in this gold-rich West African country.
