Ghana : Adoption d’une loi historique pour protéger ses côtes et la pêche artisanal
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama signed into law this week the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act No. 1146, a landmark measure aimed at strengthening protection of artisanal fishing grounds and combating illegal industrial trawling. The legislation marks a milestone for coastal communities and ocean justice, extending the coastal exclusive zone from six to twelve nautical miles and establishing an independent commission to oversee fisheries management.
Fishing, Ghana's economic pillar, providing 60% of animal protein and seafood exports exceeding $425 million annually, is threatened by the decline in small pelagic fish (less than 10% of their levels in the 1990s) and the intrusion of trawlers into artisanal areas.
This law, the result of years of advocacy, strengthens sanctions against illegal fishing, improves crew welfare standards, and protects food security and coastal resilience. By adopting this legislation, Ghana is setting a benchmark for West Africa, while protecting its exports from the risk of international sanctions.
