A young man lost his life after attempting to beat his friend's record in a high-risk game.

This is one challenge too many. In Babile, a small town in Ghana, what was supposed to be just a "game" between friends turned into a nightmare.

Kukura, a young man in his twenties, died after swallowing ten Tramadol tablets at once. His goal was simply to outdo a friend who had just swallowed six in front of him.

According to witnesses and local authorities, the tragedy unfolded in a flash. Kukura initially swallowed the ten pills to impress his group of friends, but his body gave out almost immediately, and he collapsed, completely weakened. Given the severity of his condition, his relatives rushed him to the Babile Polyclinic. He was then transferred to Wa Hospital, and subsequently to Tamale Teaching Hospital for desperate treatment, but ultimately succumbed despite the intense efforts of the medical staff.

“People know who is selling these drugs in their communities, but they don’t report them. You may think your child is safe today, but tomorrow they could follow friends and fall into the same trap.” — Kelvin Sunkpal Dafaari, spokesperson for the local Task Force.

Tramadol is primarily a powerful painkiller belonging to the opioid family, but it is widely misused by a segment of the youth population. Teenagers and young adults use this drug to experience intense excitement, increase their physical endurance, or simply to fit in with a group and gain a certain social status.

However, the medical reality of this overdose is undeniable. Excessive consumption of this substance causes immediate respiratory distress, leads to serious damage to the brain and other vital organs, and frequently results in coma or death, as was the case for Kukura.
