Guinée-Bissau: discussions entre la junte et Diomaye Faye et Cie sur une transition politique
Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio, who holds the rotating presidency of ECOWAS, and his Senegalese counterpart Bassirou Diomaye Faye have tried to accelerate the establishment of a transition with members of the junta, led by General Horta N'Tam.
The mediators are advocating for a short and transparent transition to restore constitutional order.
After seizing power, the army announced it would control the country for a year. It now claims a "security period" is necessary to stabilize the country before elections, and believes one year is insufficient, a member of the High Military Command, the junta's governing body, told AFP.
"Our discussions were constructive," Mr. Bio wrote on X after the meetings, calling for "a rapid transition led by an inclusive government."
Just days after the November presidential election in Guinea-Bissau, the army overthrew President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who was seeking a second term, and suspended the electoral process.
ECOWAS leaders also met with Fernando Dias, the opposition candidate in the presidential election, who has been granted political asylum at the Nigerian embassy since the coup.
They also visited Domingos Simoes Pereira, another opposition figure, in prison, an AFP journalist observed. He was declared ineligible to run for office by the Supreme Court and has been imprisoned since the coup.
At the end of December, the junta released six members of the political opposition, close to Mr. Pereira. Three more opposition members were released on Thursday.
"The ECOWAS delegations had called for the unconditional release of all political prisoners, arguing that their detention was hindering the establishment of a climate of trust necessary for resolving the crisis," the member of the High Military Command told AFP.
But the junta favours a gradual approach to the release of prisoners, without a precise timetable, he indicated.
The possibility of establishing an ECOWAS intervention force, deployable in the event of a worsening crisis, was also discussed.
But several sources in Bissau indicate that local authorities would perceive such a deployment as a threat to their sovereignty.
