Guinée : Manifestation nocturne de jeunes à Siguiri, un mort et plusieurs interpellations
A spontaneous demonstration by young people broke out on the night of Saturday, November 29, 2025 in the urban commune of Siguiri, causing tensions and temporary disruptions in traffic.
The protesters erected barricades and burned tires on the main road, paralyzing several activities for several hours.
The reasons for the anger
According to information gathered on site, the protesters were denouncing the use of "poclaines" machines in their residential area and demanding the immediate release of a young local leader arrested by the authorities.
A young man from the area, contacted by phone this Sunday morning, explained: “We went out at night to denounce the use of bulldozers in the area and demand the immediate release of our colleague Thiam, arrested by the authorities. We are also demanding the departure of the prefect. As we are not being listened to, in the coming days, we will escalate our actions,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The gendarmerie and the police intervened to disperse the demonstrators, making several arrests.
A tragedy on the sidelines of the clashes
As the clashes intensified, a tragic event occurred. A young man was killed after being crushed under the bed of a truck, according to several witnesses. "He was reportedly knocked off balance by tear gas before falling under the bed," a local source reported. The young man's tragic death, crushed under the weight of the vehicle after being destabilized by the gas, sent shockwaves throughout the city. The population is struggling to understand how a demonstration intended to be peaceful could have ended in such a tragedy.
Response from the authorities
In response to rumors of a death linked to the clashes, the president of the special delegation of Siguiri, Mr. Souleymane Koita, wanted to clarify: "The death being discussed is not related to the demonstration, but rather to a traffic accident. A truck ran over a citizen," he stated over the phone.
However, on the ground, doubt and anger remain among a part of the population, who are demanding more clarity on the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
A precarious calm, but a persistent tension
This Sunday morning, calm has returned to the city. Traffic has resumed as normal and economic activity has restarted.
But the anger of young people remains palpable, with many denouncing the injustice and the lack of responsiveness from local authorities.
Another sign of social unrest
This new episode of tension in Siguiri is a reminder of the fragility of the social climate in several mining areas of the country.
Despite the wealth of the subsoil, many young people continue to feel excluded from the economic benefits and demand more participation in local decisions.
