Le Portugal a suspendu son aide militaire à la Guinée-Bissau
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel announced in Parliament on Tuesday that Lisbon had suspended its military aid to Guinea-Bissau. However, assistance to the civilian population will continue, the Portuguese Foreign Minister clarified.
The official also expressed concern about "the arbitrary arrest of (opposition leader) Domingos Simoes Pereira." He believes this decision is "an obstacle to a return to normalcy" in the country.
The recent amendment to the Guinea-Bissau Constitution is also not to Paulo Rangel's liking. He announced that he would soon travel to the ECOWAS headquarters to forge closer ties with the organization and engage in direct dialogue on the situation in Guinea-Bissau.
The President of the Republic now appoints the Prime Minister
According to the country's new constitution, the President of the Republic now appoints the Prime Minister. This was not the case under the previous constitution, where the Prime Minister was chosen from the parliamentary majority. This led to difficult periods of cohabitation, as seen after the 2023 legislative elections.
