Madagascar : l'allocution du président reportée en raison de l'irruption de militaires à la TV publique
The speech by Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina, eagerly awaited after the military joined the protesters challenging the government, was postponed Monday to 8:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. GMT) due to the arrival of a "group of armed soldiers" at the headquarters of the public television station, the presidency announced.
The head of state, who this weekend denounced "an attempt to take illegal power" in this particularly poor island in the Indian Ocean, was initially due to address the nation at 7:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. GMT) from an unknown location.
According to French radio RFI, he boarded a French military plane for Reunion Island on Sunday, before heading to another destination with his family. The French government did not respond to AFP's requests for comment.
The soldiers who came to try to prevent the broadcast of the speech belonged to Capsat, a witness told AFP. This is the military unit that launched the mutiny by announcing on Saturday that it "refused to fire on the demonstrators" before opening the road to the center of the Malagasy capital, which was blocked by gendarmes.
The new chief of staff appointed this weekend by officers of this unit, General Démosthène Pikulas, appeared before Malagasy public television TVM on Monday to "intervene, resolve the conflict and assume his responsibilities," the Malagasy presidency stated on Facebook.
