Mali's ruling junta announced Sunday evening the suspension of classes in schools and universities, starting Monday and for two weeks, due to fuel supply difficulties caused by a blockade organized by jihadists.
The ruling military also announced that starting Sunday and "until further notice," fuel supply restrictions will be imposed, with priority given to "emergency, assistance, and public transport vehicles" at dedicated stations, in a separate statement from the inter-ministerial committee for crisis and disaster management.
Since September, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has been organizing a blockade in Mali on fuel imported from neighboring countries, severely disrupting the landlocked Sahelian country. The group has targeted fuel tankers, particularly those from Senegal and Ivory Coast, through which the majority of imported goods transit.
"Classes will be suspended throughout the country from Monday, October 27 to Sunday, November 9 inclusive," said a joint statement from the Ministries of National Education and Higher Education.
"This decision is due to disruptions in the fuel supply," said the statement, which announced an upcoming reorganization of school and university calendars.
Furthermore, stations "will be dedicated to refueling emergency vehicles including ambulances, hearses", public transport vehicles, intercity buses and heavy-duty trucks" in addition to state vehicles involved in crisis management, according to the press release from the interministerial committee, which cites 12 stations selected in the district of Bamako.
The same measure will be applied "if necessary in the regions, by the governors," she continues.
Since 2012, Mali has been facing a serious security crisis fueled in particular by violence from JNIM and the Islamic State in the Sahel.
According to JNIM, the blockade is a retaliatory measure for the Malian authorities' ban on the sale of fuel outside of filling stations in rural areas, where fuel is transported in jerrycans for later sale. The measure was aimed at drying up the jihadists' supply lines, according to Malian authorities.
The junta, in power since two coups in 2020 and 2021, is struggling to stem jihadist attacks on the ground.
