Maroc: des heurts lors de manifestations inédites de jeunes
Clashes erupted Tuesday evening between protesters and police in several Moroccan cities following a call for protests by a collective called GenZ 212 demanding reforms to the public health and education sectors, according to local media.
In Inzegane, a suburb of Agadir (south), people, some wearing balaclavas, threw stones at police officers and set fire to barriers, garbage bins and the area around a shopping center, according to videos relayed by local media, which AFP was unable to authenticate.
Violence also took place in Beni Mellal (centre), Aït Amira, near Agadir, and Oujda (northeast), according to the same sources.
It was not immediately possible to obtain an assessment of these clashes from the Moroccan authorities.
For the fourth consecutive day, demonstrations took place in several cities at the call of the GenZ 212 group, which recently emerged via calls for protests on social networks like Discord and whose founders are unknown.
The latter expressed their "regret" at the violence and called on the demonstrators "to respect the peaceful nature" of their protests, according to a statement published Tuesday evening on social networks.
In Rabat, more than 200 protesters have been arrested over the past three days during these rallies, which were banned and dispersed by police, but which remained peaceful until Tuesday. Most of the protesters have been released, according to the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH).
On Tuesday, the prosecution decided that a first group of 37 people, including three in detention, would be tried starting October 7, their lawyer, Souad Brahma, told AFP, saying she did not yet know the charges against them.
In Casablanca, the public prosecutor's office has submitted a request for the opening of an investigation against 18 people for "their alleged involvement in obstructing traffic" during a demonstration on Sunday, reported the Moroccan news agency MAP, specifying that six minors had been brought before a specialized authority.
In a statement Tuesday, the liberal and center-right government coalition said it "listened to and understood the social demands" of these young people and "was ready to respond to them in a positive and responsible manner."
GenZ 212 describes itself as a "space for discussion" on "issues that concern all citizens, such as health, education, and the fight against corruption," and claims to reject "violence" and act out of "love for the country and King" Mohammed VI.
In Morocco, social inequality remains a major problem with strong regional disparities and a gap between the public and private sectors.
Demonstrations have taken place in several cities in recent weeks to denounce a deterioration in public services, following an initial protest in Agadir following media reports of the deaths of eight pregnant women admitted to the public hospital for caesarean sections.
