Mauritanie: la Cour suprême confirme la condamnation de l'ex-président Aziz à 15 ans de prison
Mauritania's Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz contesting his 15-year prison sentence for abusing his power to amass a huge fortune, according to a court document seen by AFP.
Mr. Aziz, sentenced in the first instance in December 2023 to five years in prison, had, in May 2025, received on appeal a sentence of 15 years, for "illicit enrichment" and "influence peddling".
"The (Supreme) Court issued its decision today, November 4, 2025, confirming the conviction of Mr. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz," according to the court document obtained by AFP.
Mr. Aziz, 69, who led Mauritania from 2008 to 2019, is one of the few former heads of state convicted of illicit enrichment while in power. His peers tried by national or international courts are primarily prosecuted for violent crimes.
With this confirmation by the Supreme Court of his conviction on appeal, Mr. Aziz, detained since January 24, 2023 after spending several months in detention in 2021, continues his descent into hell under his successor Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, one of his most loyal companions in the past.
Mr. Ghazouani was his partner in the coup that brought him to power in 2008, his former chief of staff and his former Minister of Defense.
Mr. Aziz had led this pivotal country between the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa until 2019, a country once shaken by coups and jihadist actions, but which returned to stability under his presidency.
