Présidentielle au Bénin: la candidature du principal parti d'opposition rejetée

Benin's National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA) announced on Thursday that it was rejecting the candidacy of Renaud Agbodjo, a representative of the main opposition party, the Democrats, for the April presidential election.

This decision, which can be appealed, opens a royal road for the candidate of the presidential majority, the Minister of Finance Romuald Wadagni, who is qualified.

Mr. Agbodjo's candidacy was rejected due to a lack of sufficient sponsorship, the CENA stated in a press release.

The final list, after possible appeals to the Constitutional Court, will be known on October 31.

Renaud Agbodjo, a 43-year-old lawyer, was appointed in mid-October by his party, the Democrats.

To qualify, you must obtain 28 sponsorships from elected officials, according to the electoral code.

With the Democrats having exactly 28 elected representatives, a single defection from their ranks could therefore lead to the invalidation of the opponent's candidacy.

According to the Cena, the sponsorship of MP Michel Sodjinou has been "declared invalid."

Besides Romuald Wadagni, a so-called "moderate" opponent, Paul Hounkpè, is also qualified.

In total, three applications were rejected.
