Umaro Embalo : Que fait-il encore au pouvoir ?
Is Umaro Sissoco Embalo playing for extra time as president of Guinea-Bissau? This is the question that has been asked for several months. Indeed, the president of this Portuguese-speaking West African country took office on February 27, 2020, after being declared the winner of that year's presidential election. He is therefore expected to leave power on February 27, 2025. This, in any case, is what the opposition maintains.
Ubuesque!
The country's Supreme Court doesn't see things the same way. In a ruling issued on February 3, it formally decreed that Mr. Embalo's term will end on September 4, 2025, and that he will not leave office until the newly elected president is inaugurated. This is absurd.
In West African countries known as models of democracy, presidents leave power at the end of their terms. Elections are held well in advance.
The Beninese example
In Benin, for example, the current president, Patrice Talon, won the presidential elections of March 2016 and took power on April 6, 2016, the date of the official end of the mandate of his predecessor Thomas Boni Yayi. If we stick to this single example, Umaro Sissoco Embalo ceased to be the president of Guinea Bissau as of yesterday, Thursday, September 4, 2025.
President out of office
It is reasonable to assume that the Guinea-Bissau leader is playing for extra time at the helm of his country. He will spend another two months in power, as the next presidential elections are scheduled for November 23, 2025.
