An aircraft crash occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,700 meters near the Barafu camp. All passengers died.
A helicopter crashed on Wednesday on Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak and a major tourist attraction in Tanzania, killing all five people on board, including two Czech tourists, Tanzanian authorities announced on Thursday.
The accident occurred at an altitude of approximately 4,700 meters near the Barafu camp, according to the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority. "The aircraft was carrying five people. Tragically, all five perished in the crash," the authority stated. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
According to local police commander Simon Maigwa, the aircraft was on a rescue mission when it crashed around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (2:30 p.m. GMT). Among the victims were the pilot, a Zimbabwean national, and two Czech tourists, according to the police officer.
In June, the European Union placed all Tanzanian airlines on its list of high-risk carriers. In 2022, a plane crashed into Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, killing 19 people.
In 1999, a dozen people, including ten American tourists, were killed in a plane crash in northern Tanzania while flying between Serengeti National Park and Kilimanjaro Airport.
