Décès de Sény Awa Camara : Bignona pleure une icône de la sculpture contemporaine

The art world is in mourning. Sény Awa Camara, a true master of contemporary sculpture and an emblematic figure of African art, has passed away in complete secrecy. The potter died at the age of 81 in Bignona, leaving behind a universal body of work, celebrated in the world's leading galleries, though it remained largely unknown in her own country for many years.

Born in Bignona around 1945 into a family of potters, Sény Awa Camara displayed a remarkable talent for terracotta modeling from a very young age. According to accounts from those close to her, she developed her talent in secret during her youth. It was almost by chance that her mother discovered her collection of works, revealing an extraordinary creative genius.

Her work is distinguished by its deep roots in the Casamance tradition, while also exuding a spiritual and symbolic power. Through her sculptures, she explored universal themes such as motherhood, marriage, and, more broadly, the complexity of the human condition.

A meteoric rise to international recognition

While Senegal took some time to recognize the full extent of his talent, the international scene was quick to do so. His breakthrough began in 1989 with the renowned "Magiciens de la Terre" exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This remarkable appearance opened doors to major international events, from the "Africa Now" exhibition in 1992 to the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. Today, his creations are featured in prestigious institutions such as the Tate Modern in London, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and in important collections in Norway.

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Handicrafts issued a statement paying tribute to an artist who "transcended tradition to create a unique and universal body of sculptural work." The authorities also noted that efforts to promote her artistic contribution had been initiated in recent months.

Sény Awa Camara passed away during the night of Saturday, January 24th to Sunday, January 25th, 2026. She was laid to rest on Sunday, January 25th at the Manguiline cemetery. A large crowd, composed of relatives, admirers, and cultural figures, accompanied this major voice of African sculpture for a final farewell.
