Urbanisme et commerce : Le Sénégal mise sur des villes modernes et inclusives
At the Council of Ministers on October 22, 2025, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized the importance of inclusive and responsible management of urban spaces to support the modernization of cities and municipalities. He reiterated that the development of urban areas cannot be limited to infrastructure: it must integrate safety, sanitation, and the quality of life of residents, while promoting sustainable economic dynamism.
The Head of State called on the government to develop controlled commercial urban planning, capable of reconciling the growth of economic activities with security and public order. The goal is to create harmonious cities where residents can move around, work, and trade in optimal conditions. This approach involves rigorous planning of commercial spaces, roads, and public services to prevent congestion, improve accessibility, and strengthen the resilience of urban centers in the face of demographic and economic pressures.
Furthermore, the President reaffirmed his commitment to accelerating the modernization of markets and commercial spaces by equipping them with suitable infrastructure and modern equipment. This strategy aims to revitalize local commerce, support local artisans and traders, and improve people's access to essential goods and services. The initiative underscores a desire to make urban planning a lever for inclusive development, combining economic prosperity and quality of life, while consolidating social cohesion and local sovereignty in Senegalese cities.
