Maroc – Sénégal : Sonko signale des distorsions à corriger dans la coopération économique
On Monday, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko co-chaired the 15th session of the Senegalese-Moroccan Joint Commission. He informed the Moroccan head of government that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is very dynamic. However, he added, the two states can do much better.
"Doing better means working towards greater fairness in trade relations. The imbalances noted in the various areas of cooperation are detrimental, in the long term, to the quality of our trade," he told Aziz Akhannouch, his Moroccan counterpart.
He invited him to discuss the causes of these distortions and to consider together solutions that could address them. "I know you are aware of this. Our responsibility as political authorities is to work towards the prosperity of our two states," he said.
Indeed, the two countries have maintained stable economic relations over the decades. However, in terms of trade, the balance tips in Morocco's favor. In 2024, for example, Senegal's exports to Morocco were estimated at 24.7 billion CFA francs.
As for imports, Senegal's orders of Moroccan products in 2024 amounted to 147 billion FCFA. They represent a 19.2% increase compared to 2023 (123.4 billion FCFA) and are dominated by manufactured goods and everyday consumer products.
