Réforme exigée du Conseil de sécurité : L’Afrique doit parler d’une voix « unique » et « forte », selon Cheikh Niang

Supported by the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government of the African Union (C 10), of which Senegal is a member, the reform of the Security Council to ensure equitable representation of Africa is today much more than a request. It is an African demand recently reiterated by Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the podium of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Taking the opportunity to speak on the set of the "Objection" program this Sunday on Sud FM, where he was a guest, the head of Senegalese diplomacy, Cheikh Niang, believes that Africa must speak with a single "voice" to tip the scales in its favor. And, it is a matter of its representativeness and the defense of the continent's interests in the concert of nations.

"Africa is not duly represented on the United Nations Security Council, hence the insistence of African countries, the C10, of which Senegal is a member, to reform the Security Council as quickly as possible. On African issues, for example, it is often non-African countries that have the 'pen holding' at the Security Council level, and it is important to review all of this. This is an issue that is dear to Africans," he emphasizes.

One of the ambitions of the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Niang, is to convince his African colleagues to have a common voice whenever possible. "If we all speak with a single, strong voice, we will carry much more weight," he says. "We have the same interests and are subject to the same conditions. We suffer the same inequity of the international order. We are subject to the laws of the market dictated by others. But with the number we have, I think we can assert ourselves politically, diplomatically, economically, and financially and dictate our own rules," he continues.

On this issue, the minister added, it has been noted that African countries have joined groups whose positions on Security Council reform diverge from those of the C10. In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs believes that it is "important that African heads of state and government call some of their members to order."
