Production de coton : Le Sénégal en passe de dépasser le Bénin
These efforts may soon bear fruit...or their thread. A reason born from the statement of the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock on the cotton sector.
As part of the monitoring of the 2025 agricultural campaign, Dr. Mabouba Diagne initiated a tour, the first stop of which was Kédougou. In this region located in the southeast of the country, the minister, leading a delegation, visited the village of Taïfa, in the commune of Dembou. Expressing his satisfaction with this year's agricultural prospects, the authority took the opportunity to provide some forecasts. "We will also have some very nice surprises with cotton. The director of Sodefitex has just confirmed to me that we have increased yields by 60% from last year compared to this year, and that Senegal has had the best cotton yields in all of West Africa," he said.
According to a technical note from SODEFITEX (Société de Développement et des Fibres Textiles), the cotton sector is expected to see considerable growth during the 2025-2026 campaign. Sown areas are expected to increase by 70% and reach 21,355 hectares, farmed by 16,151 producers grouped within 1,251 Cotton Producer Groups.
Still according to the document, this rebound demonstrates "the massive return of producers to cotton, after several difficult years marked by the parasitic crisis of the jassids." Maintaining the average yield of 1,259 kg/ha, production could reach 25,000 tonnes of cotton seed, an increase of more than 60%. In Kédougou, the area sown peaks at 4,100 hectares (+74%), for an expected production of 5,600 tonnes and a yield close to 1,400 kg/ha.
If its prospects unfold as announced, Senegal could make a leap forward on the continent in this area and could overtake "Benin, which is today number 1 in Africa, ahead of Mali" in terms of yield. Results that delight the minister. In this regard, he salutes the various actors working daily for its implementation: "In passing, I thank and congratulate the director of ISRA, because the time has come for precision agriculture, the time has come when science must accompany us in our crops."
