Vers l’autosuffisance : Le Sénégal suspend l’importation de la banane, à partir du 1er septembre 2025
As part of the implementation of the Senegal 2050 Agenda and the recommendations from the Interministerial Council on the Agricultural Campaign held on April 15, 2025, the Senegalese government is taking a new step towards banana self-sufficiency. A key regulatory measure has just been adopted: the suspension of banana imports as of September 1, 2025.
According to the press release, this decision follows optimistic forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock (MASAE), which announces an estimated national production of 112,500 t for the 2025 campaign, with a peak expected between September and November.
To ensure the flow of this local production and protect Senegalese producers, the Banana Industry Regulatory Steering Committee met on August 18 at the headquarters of the Market Regulation Agency (ARM). Following the discussions, a memorandum of understanding and specifications were validated between producers and importing traders.
The suspension of imports is presented as a pilot measure, which will be accompanied by a rigorous monitoring system. A monitoring committee has been set up to oversee market supplies and prevent any disruption or price spikes.
This initiative marks a concrete step in the national strategy aimed at reducing dependence on imports of agricultural products, while strengthening local production and marketing capacities.
