The hydrological situation of the Gambia River basin, recorded this Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 8:00 a.m., shows a general downward trend at all stations monitored by the Tambacounda–Kédougou Water Resources Brigade.
Tributaries in sharp decline
The main hydrometric stations of the tributaries of the Gambia River show significant decreases in water levels.
- In Diaguiri, the height recorded this morning was 2.23 meters, compared to 2.37 meters the day before, a drop of 14 centimeters. Last year at the same time, the level reached 5.03 meters.
- At Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the trend is even more marked with a decline of 30 centimeters, the level dropping from 2.32 meters to 2.02 meters in 24 hours. On October 16, 2024, this station displayed 5.49 meters.
- In Niokolo Koba, the level stood at 5.57 meters, compared to 5.60 meters the day before, a drop of 3 centimeters. On the same date in 2024, the height reached nearly 10 meters (9.99 m).
- The stations of Sinthiou Malème, Goumbayel and Diahra Pont remain below the measurement scale.
The Gambia River continues to recede
At the level of the main river, the trend also remains downward.
- In Kédougou, the water level measured this morning is 3.30 meters, compared to 3.46 meters on October 15, a drop of 16 centimeters. At the same time last year, the level was 4.52 meters. It is important to remember that the alert level for this station is set at 7 meters.
- In Mako, the recorded height was 3.26 meters, compared to 3.41 meters the day before, a drop of 15 centimeters. In 2024, the level was 4.65 meters on the same date. The alert level there is set at 6 meters.
- At Simenti, the day's data have not been received. The previous day, the water level was 5.50 meters. As a reminder, the alert level for this station is 13 meters.
- Finally, at Gouloumbou, the station recorded a significant drop: 7.96 meters compared to 8.24 meters on October 15, a decrease of 28 centimeters. In 2024, the river peaked at 12.11 meters at the same time. The alert level there is 12 meters.
A gradual decline but one to monitor
These figures confirm the seasonal trend of declining water levels, which is typical at this time of year, marking the end of the rainy season. However, vigilance remains required in certain areas where levels, although falling, remain high compared to normal thresholds.
