If the Dakar criminal court follows the public prosecutor's recommendation, Babacar Ly, 27, a plasterer residing in Rufisque, will spend the next ten years in prison. He appeared in court on January 27, 2026, for the murder of his friend Mama Ba, which occurred in the Senelec housing complex in Rufisque. He allegedly stabbed him several times with a broken bottle.
According to the prosecution, the events date back to the night of August 31st to September 1st, 2020. On that day, a violent altercation broke out at the Kansawady bar in the Senelec housing complex. Babacar Ly and the victim, Mama Ba, who were already on bad terms, allegedly clashed over a beer. Babacar reportedly refused to buy Mama a drink. A fight broke out in the bar before they were separated.
Moments later, Babacar Ly reportedly returned, armed with a shard of glass concealed in his back pocket. He then allegedly joined the victim on the bar's terrace. Taking advantage of Mama Ba's seated position, he allegedly struck her twice violently in the back of the neck, a vital area, before fleeing. Rushed to the hospital, Mama Ba unfortunately did not survive her injuries.
The medical certificates submitted to the file reveal that the victim died as a result of infectious shock due to acute generalized peritonitis, following a perforation of a gastroduodenal ulcer, aggravated by a superinfected wound on the back of the neck.
After the incident, Babacar Ly disappeared. Investigators noted his absence from the family home at dawn. His father, questioned by police, claimed to have no idea where his son was. It was only after an intensive investigation that he was located and apprehended in Bignona. He was arrested and remanded in custody. During questioning, Babacar Ly admitted to the crime but denied premeditation.
In court, the accused adopted the same stance. He stated that he had injured the victim, who was his friend. He explained his actions by claiming that they were both intoxicated.
According to Babacar, there were five of them at the table, and they had consumed five bottles of whiskey and ten bottles of beer, which he himself had paid for. However, Mama, who hadn't been invited, apparently wanted to join in the drinking. He explained that the victim then overturned the table and tried to knock him unconscious with the ice bucket.
The accused also denied finding the victim on the terrace during the second altercation. He said it was Mama who found him there, armed with a knife, ready to fight him. In self-defense, Babacar said he broke a bottle and struck him several times with the shard.
Mamadou Assane Sarr, the victim's uncle, requested that the family's interests be protected.
In his submissions, the public prosecutor requested that the crime be reclassified from murder to premeditated assault and battery. The prosecution sought a sentence of ten years' imprisonment.
Following this, the defense contested premeditation and pleaded for leniency, arguing that their client was intoxicated.
The case is adjourned for deliberation until February 24, 2026.
