A Washington, la police migratoire sème la peur, les habitants se rebiffent
The deployment of the National Guard on the streets of the capital this summer has led to increased operations by immigration agents, especially in Latino neighborhoods. It has also aroused the anger of residents, who, like the rest of the country, have been invited to demonstrate this Saturday, October 18.
José (1) didn't see it coming. This Salvadoran was leaving his home late last week in the heavily Latino Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., to go to work. He'd barely stepped through the door when two masked men, positioned on either side of the steps, attacked him. He received a blow to the eyebrow, which caused him to fall, then a kick to the ground. Once he was bundled into an unmarked car, he realized the two men were ICE agents, the immigration police. "Look at my phone, I have a residency permit, I'm legal!" The agents checked and said a terse, "Oh, sorry, bad guy," before leaving him there on the sidewalk, his arm in a jug and his head bleeding.
José is almost one of the lucky ones. Since this summer, this kind of scene has become sadly commonplace for the Latin American community in the U.S. capital. Most of the time, these are undocumented immigrants.
