Booba sera jugé à Paris pour injures racistes et cyberharcèlement
Rapper Booba, already in legal trouble over a cyberbullying case, will soon be tried in Paris for discriminatory insults against a journalist and an essayist, and for cyberbullying, the Paris prosecutor's office said Thursday, contacted by AFP.
The public prosecutor's office said that the rapper, whose real name is Elie Yaffa, was brought before a public prosecutor on Tuesday, who issued him a summons to appear before a Paris court on December 3 for public insults of a discriminatory nature against a journalist, Linh-Lan Dao, and the essayist Tristan Mendès France, as well as for aggravated cyberbullying against the former.
Until then, he is placed under judicial supervision with a ban on having contact with the victims and must pay bail.
"This case will be heard by a chamber specializing in press law. Booba is completely calm and will reserve his explanations for the court," his lawyers, Marie Roumiantseva and Gilles Vercken, responded.
It was not immediately clear whether the December 3 hearing would be procedural or would allow the defendant to actually be tried for these facts.
Regarding the journalist, Booba is to be tried primarily for aggravated cyberbullying and discriminatory public insults for comments published on X in January 2024, referring to his origins.
Linh-Lan Dao's lawyer, Ilana Soskin, told AFP that her client would file a civil suit at the hearing. "The harassment she suffered and the insults based on her race that were uttered by Booba, followed and relayed by hundreds of internet users, cannot go unpunished," she said.
Regarding essayist Tristan Mendès France, a specialist in digital cultures at Paris-Cité University, Booba will have to respond to messages on X from January 2024 in which he wrote about him "He is nose before shame", comments accompanied by a photograph of the victim next to another of the serial killer Francis Heaulme, or even having written "nezfaste".
Asked by AFP, Mr. Mendès France clarified that he was not the one who initiated the proceedings, nor did he intend to become a civil party in this case.
"With his imprint on X, his messages triggered a spectacular flood of anti-Semitic comments," he said.
"You have to have a lamentable historical culture not to remember the anti-Semitic attacks against the name Mendès France and particularly Pierre Mendès France," President of the Council under the Fourth Republic, "whose effigy was brandished during the Pétainist exhibition on the Jews," he added.
Booba has also been under investigation since October 2023 and under judicial supervision for aggravated online moral harassment against the former queen of influencers Magali Berdah.
