Crise Yéménite : ‘’Préoccupé’’ par la situation sécuritaire, le Sénégal appelle à la désescalade
Following the Arab League, the Senegalese government also commented on the Yemeni crisis, which has caused particular concern. This concern is heightened by the security situation in certain provinces, notably Hadramawt and Al-Mahra, where the main separatist group in southern Yemen rejected, this Friday, a call from Saudi Arabia to withdraw its forces from the areas it seized at the beginning of December.
On Thursday, Saudi Arabia stated that it remained hopeful the Southern Transitional Council (STC) would end the escalation and withdraw its forces from the provinces, after the group claimed control of large parts of the south and ousted the internationally recognized, Riyadh-backed government from its seat in Aden. This led to an escalation of fighting, with airstrikes in Hadramawt killing two members of the STC's elite Hadhrami forces.
Faced with the resurgence of violence (civil war) that has plagued the country since 2014, the Senegalese government, in a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed "the constant efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in favor of de-escalation, the preservation of stability and the search for a lasting solution to the Yemeni crisis".
"Committed to the principles of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, as well as the peaceful settlement of disputes, Senegal encourages all parties concerned to show restraint, to avoid any escalation and to prioritize dialogue and consultation in the best interests of the Yemeni people," the statement added.
The government of the Republic of Senegal has also reaffirmed "its readiness to support, in a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility, any regional or international initiative that leads to a political, peaceful and lasting settlement of the Yemeni crisis."
In a statement released this Friday morning, the Arab League stressed that "the question of the South has well-known historical and social dimensions, which must be addressed within the framework of a comprehensive political dialogue bringing together all Yemeni parties, with a view to reaching a lasting settlement that tackles the root causes of the crisis."
