Was he set up? Perhaps, but the fact remains that his remarks sparked a major controversy in Italy.
The man in question is described as the imam of one of the mosques in the city of Brescia. He recently told a journalist that Islam tolerates marriage with underage girls.
"In our Islam, a girl becomes an adult after the age of 9. The Quran says that it is possible: she can marry a man of 30 or 40 years old. The Islamic religion says that, if the parents agree and everyone consents, a girl can get married from the age of 9," the religious leader told his counterpart who was filming him with well-hidden cameras.
It must be said that the journalist had posed as an Italian wanting to convert to Islam and who wished to know more about arranged marriages with minors.
"This is extremely serious and unacceptable."
The imam's statements broadcast on the program "Fuori dal Coro" on Rete 4 have sparked numerous reactions in the Italian political sphere.
Cristina Almici, a member of parliament for the Brothers of Italy party, strongly condemned these remarks. "This is extremely serious and unacceptable. If these statements were confirmed, we would be faced with a form of cultural and ideological legitimization of practices that seriously violate the fundamental rights of minors," Ms. Almici declared, adding that she would be submitting a parliamentary question.
The League and the Islamic cultural center of Brescia condemn…
The League, Matteo Salvini's party, has attacked the municipality of Brescia, accusing it of housing several mosques disguised as "cultural centers where the rights of women and girls are not respected."
For the far-right party, marrying off a young girl is a crime and it is unacceptable that in Italy, 9-year-old girls are considered potential brides.
The Islamic cultural center of Brescia issued a statement disassociating itself from the remarks made by the imam. According to the center, these "extremely serious" statements come from "isolated individuals who in no way represent the thought and/or organization of the Islamic community."
