États-Unis : Washington officialise son retrait de l’OMS
After a year's legal notice, the United States officially left the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, January 22, 2026. This decision, formalized on January 22, 2025 by President Donald Trump, marks the end of American membership in the UN institution.
Washington justifies this withdrawal by citing what it calls the WHO's ineffectiveness in managing past health crises, arguing that the organization's lack of transparency and responsiveness has severely impacted the American economy. US authorities also maintain that the country has contributed too much financially to the institution.
The United States' withdrawal results in an 18% loss of the WHO's budget. Furthermore, the country is leaving unpaid contributions for 2024 and 2025, estimated at approximately $260 million. Faced with this situation, the WHO has already halved its leadership team and plans to eliminate nearly a quarter of its global staff by the first half of 2026, a measure that could weaken global health surveillance.
