France: des "dizaines de fichiers" sensibles du ministère de l'Intérieur volés lors d'une cyberattaque

"A few dozen" confidential files were "extracted" during a cyberattack that affected the French Interior Ministry for several days, the government announced Wednesday.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described it as "very serious" before the deputies, announcing immediate restrictive measures for agents, including systematic double authentication.

When questioned about the scale of the attack during the question period in the National Assembly, the minister acknowledged the severity of the malicious intrusion that occurred last week.

The security breach was made possible by a lack of "digital hygiene," with passwords allowing access to protected files being exchanged "in plain text" on compromised professional messaging systems, Mr. Nuñez explained.

The intrusion allowed one or more hackers to access "extremely sensitive" files, including the Criminal Records Processing File and the Wanted Persons File, which are essential to the work of law enforcement.

Although a group of hackers claimed responsibility for stealing data concerning 16 million people, the minister stated that at this stage, only "a few dozen records" have been extracted "to date", while remaining cautious pending the complete inventory.

Faced with these "imprudent actions", Laurent Nuñez announced a series of immediate "remediation" measures, including the closure of certain accounts and the systematic imposition of "two-factor authentication".
