According to the President of the United States, Ukraine could "regain its territory in its original form and perhaps even go further" against Russia.

Blanche no longer wants to try to coax the Kremlin into ending the war in Ukraine. Donald Trump is even considering an outcome with Volodymyr Zelensky as the winner.

The US president said on Tuesday that Ukraine could "regain its territory in its original form and perhaps even go further" against Russia. However, he said nothing about the role his country would play in the ongoing conflict, whether it be sanctioning Moscow, supporting kyiv, or acting as a mediator.

Russia compared to a "paper tiger"

"For three and a half years, Russia has been waging a war without clear leadership that a Real Military Power would have won in less than a week," Donald Trump also wrote on his Truth Social network, comparing Vladimir Putin's country to "a paper tiger."

The about-face is therefore significant. The American president had sharply told Volodymyr Zelensky at the beginning of the year that he "did not hold the cards" in this conflict triggered in February 2022 by the Russian invasion. After his meeting Tuesday with the Ukrainian head of state on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Republican now believes that with "time, patience, and financial support from Europe, and particularly NATO, it is absolutely an option to return to the borders where this conflict began."

"Putin and Russia have BIG economic problems," the American president continued in this long, repetitive, and sometimes disjointed message. "In any case, I wish both countries the best. We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do with as it pleases. Good luck to everyone!" he concluded, in an almost casual tone.

The “escalation trap”

The American leader therefore failed to convince the Kremlin's ruler to cease hostilities, despite a face-to-face meeting in Alaska in August and several phone calls. "I thought that (ending the war in Ukraine) would be the easiest because of my relationship with Putin," but "that relationship meant nothing," Donald Trump noted Tuesday during a meeting with Emmanuel Macron.
