Iran: l'ex-impératrice appelle les forces de sécurité à rejoindre les manifestants
Former Iranian Empress Farah Pahlavi, widow of the Shah overthrown by the 1979 Islamic Revolution, on Tuesday called on security forces to join the protest movement that has been challenging the government for more than two weeks.
Farah Pahlavi, aged 87, is thus echoing her son, the former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, who had made similar remarks in recent days and actively supports the protesters from the United States - his name is regularly chanted at the rallies.
"Remember that the survival of no government, the maintenance of no advantage, does not justify the shedding of your compatriots' blood," she wrote, addressing the security forces and asking them to hear the protesters' "cries of anger and rage" and to "join them before it is too late."
According to Iran Human Rights, based in Norway, at least 648 people have been killed since the start of the movement on December 28, with the NGO fearing that the real death toll is much higher.
Authorities have shut down the internet since January 8, complicating the sharing of information.
"I know that dark minds have cut off your means of communicating with the world for fear of hearing your voice, but know that your message is too strong to be silenced," the former empress said in her statement.
Addressing Iranians as "my children," she added: "Be strong and believe that soon you will celebrate freedom together in Iran, and that light will triumph over darkness."
Farah Pahlavi, the Shah's third wife, left Iran on January 16, 1979 with her husband Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, two weeks before the return to the country of the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
