Italie: Matteo Salvini acquitté par la justice dans le procès «Open Arms»
Tried for refusing for nearly three weeks to allow 147 migrants rescued by the Spanish NGO Open Arms to disembark in August 2019, the former Minister of the Interior and current Deputy Prime Minister was acquitted in December 2024. But prosecutors in Palermo, who had sought a six-year prison sentence for kidnapping and abuse of power, appealed the verdict to the Court of Cassation. After a six-hour deliberation, the Supreme Court judges definitively upheld his acquittal.

As expected, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the anti-migrant League, Matteo Salvini, was quick to write on X: "Defending borders is not a crime." And to post a photo of himself all smiles, fist raised.

Shortly afterwards, his lawyer Giulia Bongiorno, a leading figure at the bar, declared: "The Open Arms trial shouldn't even have started, but what matters to us now is the recognition of Matteo Salvini's proper conduct."
For her part, the head of government, Giorgia Meloni, expressed her great joy on social media, stressing that "the former Minister of the Interior was only doing his duty."

These statements outraged Open Arms founder Oscar Camps: "To say that if a minister blocks rescued people at sea for days, it's not a crime, that means legitimizing the use of human suffering as a political tool."

Vous avez raison sur plusieurs points concernant l’ostracisme des blancs envers notre communauté mais par contre vous êtes en Europe et vous revendiquez le retour à l’Afrique tout en restant la bas! Ce n’est pas à l’Etat du Sénégal de vous trouver du travail, c’est à la diaspora d’utiliser son ingéniosité, son experience, son expertise et sa volonté de travailler dur pour se faire sa place au pays! Si vous êtes professeur en Espagne c’est parce qu’il y avait un besoin pour enseigner le français a des élèves et étudiants. Le gouvernement ne crée pas ce besoin. C’est un besoin dynamique. À vous de voir quel est le besoin réel d’une partie de la communauté locale et d’y subvenir. Sinon ce ne sera que de beaux discours bien calés dans son fauteuil …en occident.
