A few weeks after Irina Zarutska's murder, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared five audio clips from five calls for help made around the time of the incident on August 22. The exchanges are chilling.
A scene of chaos. In the subway where the brutal murder of young Irina Zarutska occurred, several people rushed to contact emergency services. Shocked, they all appeared disoriented, as evidenced by audio tracks shared by the American police. They describe a particularly bloody scene.
As revealed by Fox News, which had access to these excerpts, all the witnesses appeared shocked when they tried to provide information to emergency services over the phone. One of the common denominators in the various reactions heard was the mention of a particularly bloody crime scene. In one of the calls, we can hear: "She's bleeding profusely. I don't think she's conscious... There's a lot of blood."
Panic gripped the witnesses
Other voices also highlighted the young Ukrainian woman's lack of reaction, as well as the heavy bleeding. "I don't think she's reacting right now, there's a lot of blood," said a passenger on the Lynx Blue line where the incident took place.
Some people were already imagining the worst: "I think she's dead, there's no pulse." Seconds after the attack, another witness said anxiously: "I think she's dead, man. I think she might be dead."
Amidst tears, screams, and shock, another person declared: "Everyone is screaming. People are panicking. There are people around her. She looks young... I don't know." These hesitant words denote a major upheaval for these travelers.
One of them explained, for example: "I don't know where we are... There's a big building. There's a woman on the ground. She's bleeding profusely. I don't think she's conscious."
Passengers were already talking about a "reasonless" homicide
More than the trauma suffered by the witnesses, the calls highlight the sudden and unjustified nature of this attack, in which a man "stabbed for no reason" the 23-year-old woman. This version was later confirmed not only by an affidavit cited by ABC News but also by CCTV footage showing the victim stabbed to death suddenly and without apparent motive, by a person sitting behind her.
The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old homeless man with a long criminal record and reported mental health issues, stabbed him three times in the direction of the neck. He was immediately described to authorities as "a black male with dreadlocks, tied back hair, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans, with a bandaged hand."
In a statement on social media, US President Donald Trump called the alleged perpetrator an "animal" and called for him to receive the death penalty.
