Socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York mayoral election on Tuesday after a night of local elections in which Donald Trump suffered several setbacks, a message of defiance one year before the midterm elections.
The 34-year-old local official, a staunch opponent of the American president, has largely outpaced his main opponent, the former governor of the state, the centrist Andrew Cuomo, according to projections from several media outlets.
Zohran Mamdani will become the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States on January 1st.
His victory was met with shouts of joy and sometimes tears from his supporters gathered in a large rococo hall from the 1920s in central Brooklyn.
"In this time of political darkness, New York will be the light," the young elected official told them, adding that the city could "show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him."
Former Democratic President Bill Clinton, whose administration Mr. Cuomo was part of, wished the winner success in "transforming the momentum of (his) campaign" to build "a better, fairer, and more affordable New York."
"The future looks a little brighter," commented Barack Obama, referring to the various Democratic victories of the evening.
Donald Trump, who has made Zohran Mamdani one of his new targets, also reacted quickly. In a message posted on his Truth Social network, he quoted anonymous "pollsters" claiming that Republican defeats were due to the budget shutdown and the fact that his own name did not appear on the ballots.
Earlier in the day, he had called on Jewish voters to block the candidate, an activist for the Palestinian cause. In response, Zohran Mamdani reiterated his commitment, in his victory speech, to "build a city hall that (...) will not waver in the fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism."
The surprise winner of the Democratic primary in June, the Queens representative in the New York State Assembly has never since left the top of the polls, even after the withdrawal from the race of the outgoing mayor Eric Adams, who also called for defeating him by joining Andrew Cuomo.
As a sign of the enthusiasm for the election, before the polling stations closed at 9pm, more than two million voters had gone to the polls, the largest turnout in almost 60 years.
Born in Uganda to a family of intellectuals of Indian origin, arriving in the United States at the age of seven and naturalized in 2018, Zohran Mamdani has made the fight against the high cost of living the heart of his campaign.
Although Donald Trump has called him a "communist", his proposals – rent control, free buses and nurseries – are more in line with social democracy.
Very popular with young people, the future mayor also brought back to him many people who had drifted away from politics, "voters frustrated by the status quo, in search of new personalities", according to political scientist Costas Panagopoulos.
"If Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor, Trump will make short work of him," predicted Andrew Cuomo before the verdict on Tuesday, insisting, as he has throughout the campaign, on his opponent's inexperience.
On several occasions, the Republican president promised to throw obstacles in the way of the young Democratic candidate if he were elected, by opposing, if necessary, the payment of certain federal subsidies to the city.
Neighboring New York, the state of New Jersey chose Democrat Mikie Sherrill over Republican businessman Jack Ciattarelli. The state has long been considered a Democratic stronghold. But in the last presidential election, Donald Trump significantly narrowed the gap there.
Further south on the east coast, Virginia elected its first female leader, Democrat Abigail Spanberger, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears.
Finally, Californians approved a bill to redraw their electoral map in favor of Democrats, who are seeking to compensate for what Republicans did in Texas under pressure from Donald Trump.
